Sonja Rintala
NPC
Fastidiously clean and well turned out—first impressions count—Sonja Rintala is in her mid-30s. She is perceptive, well-educated, endlessly curious, and an amoral thief intent on collecting as many books and scrolls as possible. Sonja harbours dreams of setting herself up as a sage and charging princely sums for her knowledge. To that end, she owns a townhouse in the better part of town and is starting to outfit the ground floor as her (legal) place of business.
Knowledge drives Sonja—she thirsts for it as the starving hunger for food. Her lust is near boundless, and she stops at nothing to “acquire” new works. She prefers rare books, for the knowledge within will command a premium and provide her with a comfortable life. She understands there is no point knowing that which common people desire to know. Adventurers, nobles and merchants will be her clients of choice. Thus, she may introduce herself to wandering adventurers seemingly well endowed with coin, for her business must start somewhere. She may even restrain herself from stealing from potential clients—seeing her restraint as an investment in her (comfortable) future.
Zulla
Ancient Kingdom | Ruins
Said to lie in the far north, beyond even the Dusklands, the mythical kingdoms of Zulla was swallowed by snow and ice millennia ago. Much of Zulla has been ground into nothingness by the remorse snow and ice, but some of its largest ruins—four mighty stepped pyramids linked by a vast, interconnected network of underground tunnels—yet endure nature’s implacable, endless assault. Sometimes visible after severe storms, these mountain-like ruins loom large in the tales of the few explorers to reach the far north and return.
Pre-human Zulla died long ago, its folk wiped out by some unremembered catastrophe, but their shaggy-haired, primitive servants yet endure. Haunting the ruins of their once masters and led by the greatest of their kind, packs of these creatures—yeti—sometimes emerge from howling blizzards to fall upon explorers or the unfortunates dwelling in isolated settlements far from civilisation’s glittering lights. Their presence, and the horrors witnessed by the few survivors of their attacks, dissuade all but the bravest or stupidest from daring to explore the Lost Pyramids of Zulla.
Silver Cove
Coastal | Haunted | Pirates
Decades ago during a terrible storm, the Arancleon—a pirate ship laden with loot—was driven onto the rocks guarding this isolated cove. Pounded by heavy seas, the ship broke up and sank with the loss of all hands. Wreckage littered the cove after the storm abated, and the first peasants on the scene—come to pick through the wreckage—were amazed to find some of the pirates’ treasure! Since then, after—and sometimes during—storms and atrocious weather, local peasants rush to the site, hoping to be the first to find more of the pirates’ treasure, make their fortune and escape the daily grind and misery of a peasant’s lot.
Some brave souls have even tried to dive down to the sunken wreck; most such folk do not return, and local folklore populates the wreck with ghost pirates, a monstrous octopus and other terrible dangers.
Silver Cove is an isolated place of shingle and stone on an otherwise wave-lashed swath of rugged, cliff-fringed coastline. But one steep path twists down to the cove from the cliffs above, and this path is dangerous even in good weather. Periodically, particularly desperate folk build rude stone shelters on the beach and scour the foreshore for treasures every day. Most such folk find nothing; a good few disappear—perhaps they find their fortune or perhaps whatever lurks in the waters off Silver Cove creeps ashore to drag them down to a watery grave.
Courtyard of Arches
Market | Urban
Set hard against the river where the low-lying ground is prone to flooding, the Courtyard of Arches is so named for its most prominent features; all the houses here are raised up from the ground and built upon a network of arches. Thus are the houses, their residents and their goods rendered safe from the ever-present threat of flooding.
The unusual construction of the houses around the courtyard also presents a lucrative business opportunity—for a thriving, all-weather market has sprung up around the Courtyard of Arches. The owners of the houses own the space beneath their homes and rent it to stallholders, or use the space for their own mercantile doings. Except when the river is in spate, and flooding is imminent, the Market of the Arches is open for business.
Six Urban Landmarks
Urban | Location
Plague Pit Lane: Fifty years ago, plague ravaged the community. With civil order breaking down, the plague’s many victims were buried in a mass grave. The town has since expanded over the site.
The Goblin Hall: This vaulted L-shaped underground chamber is the only surviving remnant of a church that once stood on the site. The chamber was both a store and a sanctuary—a final redoubt in times of trouble.
Copse Hill: Thick stands of trees cluster atop Copse Hill. Sometimes, locals refer to the place as Corpse Hill in reference to long-standing rumours that the hill is the burial mound of a long-dead forgotten king.
The Old Man: Immensely old and gnarled, this oak tree has stood for centuries. Locals love the tree and violently oppose any who seek it harm.
Setta’s Cavern: This small cavern was discovered during the digging of a well. A capable climber can reach the cavern which has sporadically served as a home, shrine and hideout over the years. It is named for its longest inhabitant: a hermit who lived within for a decade.
The Church of Flowers: Decades ago, the church standing here burnt down. The clergy lacked the funds to rebuild the church, and the site was abandoned. A great swath of wildflowers took hold among the ruins in the years following the fire. Now locals come here to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.
