Sir Parantir the Unlucky | Arrow of Returning | Bleached Skull Gnolls | Fountain Square | Six Slum Denizens

Sir Parantir the Unlucky

Knight | Hero | NPC

The half-elven knight Parantir is famed for his bravery, fortitude and terrible luck. A hero of the common folk, he cuts a tragic, lonely figure as he roams the fells, borderlands and wilds to keep them safe from the evil and chaos that ever-presses in upon the realm.

The commonfolk know him as Parantir the Unlucky or the Unlooked For; some believe his appearance heralds calamity and danger, while others believe he is a lodestone for bad luck and that he suffers so that they may prosper. It is beyond doubt that terrible luck besets Parantir; his equipment breaks, his horses go lame and gold slips through his fingers like summer rain. He has buried five squires in lonely hillside graves, and will take no other. When a black mood is upon him, he is taciturn and dark of countenance.

For his part, Parantir believes himself to be cursed for some unknown reason, and events bear out his conclusion. At any given moment, he’s not sure how things could get worse, but he knows it’s inevitable that they will. For all that, he is indefatigable in defence of the commonfolk, and his skill with blade and bow is breathtaking. Sir Parantir’s heraldic device—borne upon his battered shield and dented plate armour—is a green oak tree surmounted by three golden stars.

Arrow of Returning

Magic Item | Wondrous Item

This +2 arrow is enchanted to return to the quiver of the archer who loosed it, if it misses its target. The arrow returns to the archer’s quiver at the start of the character’s next turn and can be shot again. In the same manner, if it strikes its target, the arrow returns to the archer’s quiver once the foe is dead. If the character has moved since shooting the arrow, it drops to the ground at the location from which it was shot.

With pristine grey fletching, a rune-graven shaft and a heavy steel tip, an arrow of returning radiates strong conjuration and evocation magic.

Bleached Skull Gnolls

Gnolls | Lonely Coast | Forest

Feral denizens of the deepest, wildest reaches of the Tangled Wood, the Bleached Skull gnolls are creatures of atavistic desires and sadistic lusts. Ferocious warriors and terrible foes, they worship the primal, blood‐soaked spirits of the woodlands and war with their neighbours for booty and sacrifices to bury alive beneath their sacred trees.

Atypically for gnolls, the Bleached Skull tribe dwells deep in enclaves scattered throughout the thick, twisted depths of the primal forest. Driven here from their normal hunting ranges by some long-forgotten inter-tribal warfare, the gnolls found sanctuary among the ancient trees of the forest and cast aside their old demonic gods to worship the woodland spirits of their new home.

The primal spirit of the woodlands touches a few of the gnolls. Within their veins courses the savage, primal vitality of the wild. Such creatures hold positions of power and influence within the tribe through dint of their exceptional strength and boundless bloodlust.

Fountain Square

Market | Urban

Set in the old castle’s outer bailey, Fountain Square has seen better days. The fountain’s statue of the legendary philosopher-king Lyzander the Wise, flanked by his faithful mountain lion companions, no longer pours forth water, and its pool is dry and full of litter. The pool’s wall is cracked in places, and its mortar is crumbling. Grumpy locals say the whole thing should be pulled down before it collapses and kills someone, while others say it is a glorious reminder of the Realm’s past. A few locals dream of restoring the fountain to full working order, but such a job would require extensive skilled (and expensive) labour and a wealthy benefactor to properly realise.

Despite this controversy, an ever-changing smattering of visiting merchants, tinkerers, entertainers and other wanderers set up stalls about the square to sell their wares and services. Thus, Fountain Square is both a good place to bag a bargain and to learn the news from outside the locality.

On holidays and during local festivals, resident farmers, traders and artisans sell their wares here. Sometimes, even an adventurer spreads a blanket on the floor to sell their unwanted equipment or the nicknacks found on their most recent expedition into the surrounding wilds.

Six Slum Denizens

Six Things | NPCs | Urban

  1. Riitta Kekko (CN female human thief 4) dreams of escaping the slums, but bad luck dogs her every step. In truth, Riitta is incapable of concentrating or following a plan, and she makes her own bad luck. Capricious and self-serving, this slender, graceful woman dresses much better than her contemporaries. She carries many daggers about her person.

  2. Iisak Ampuja (CE male human fighter 3) keeps an eye out for easy prey. Wearing dirty studded leather armour and with a well-worn shortsword at his belt, Iisak looks exactly like what he is—a thug, mugger and murderer. Unkempt black hair, a scraggly beard and ferocious body odour betray Iisak’s disdain for personal hygiene.

  3. Jegor Niera (N male human thief 1) hops along on crude crutches. At first glance, it looks like this beggar has lost his right leg, but it is actually strapped up behind him—and hidden by a dirty, voluminous cloak. Jegor takes coin from anyone and spins a tale of heroic sacrifice which culminated in him losing a leg to a vicious ogre. His story is a lie.

  4. Jyrki Koveri (N middle-aged female human) pushes her handcart laden with vegetables through the slums in search of customers. Most of her stock is old and on the turn, but it is all her customers can afford. Jyrki is stocky, brown-haired and strong.

  5. Hanna Janakka (LG female human) cares desperately for the folk of her tenement and greatly desires to free them of the thieves’ guild’s nefarious influence. She is charismatic and eloquent, but fair words and rhetoric can only take her so far. People need to eat, and most will do whatever it takes to feed their children. The slum’s grinding poverty and misery upset her, and she dreams of finding a wealthy benefactor to support her ongoing goodly endeavours.

  6. Berra Cloakwarden (N male halfling thief 3) loves the hubbub of the slums. Secretly wealthy after several lucrative adventures, he can’t bring himself to leave his old neighbourhood. Quiet and unassuming, this podgy halfling dwells in a small cottage he has slowly transformed into a comfortable home. He is paranoid and secretive—he knows if people learn of his wealth, he will quickly lose it.
