Dragon Mountain

Dragons | Mountain | Monument

Dragon Mountain thrusts skywards in a remote and isolated part of the White Spires mountain range. So named for the gigantic sculpture of an immense five-headed dragon carved into the side of a mountain, this place has loomed large in legendry since humans first gazed upon it in wonder and dread centuries past.

Dragon Mountain stands in an inaccessible part of the White Spires; other lesser, broken and precipitous mountains surround the peak, making a land-based approach almost impossible. The few adventurers and explorers known to have visited Dragon Mountain employed magical means of flight to reach the place.

Dragon Mountain is not only a carved monument—it is a cathedral dedicated to Tiamat, queen of evil dragons, and is the largest such place on the planet. Herein can be found a cadre of fanatical part-dragon, part-human acolytes, priests and wizards who tend the Crypts of the Undying Wyrms—a series of vast, interconnected caverns buried far below the cathedral. The skeletal remains of innumerable chromatic great wyrm—compelled to come here at the end of their millenia-long lives—fill the crypts. The greatest of Tiamat’s servants do not rest peacefully. Imbued with unlife by their mistress’s eternal will, they lurk in the darkness, their ranks slowly swelling. When the time is right, Tiamat will unleash her servants on the world in an orgy of destruction unmatched in all of recorded history…

Tomb of the Iron Eyes

Dungeon | Mountains | Tomb

Buried in the flank of a mighty mountain hidden among the many peaks of the White Spire’s range, the Tomb of the Iron Eyes is an infamous locale writ large in adventurers’ lore. Said to contain the vast wealth of a line of giant warlords from a time when the world was young, the place boasts singular architecture and guardians.

Everything about the Tomb of the Iron Eyes is on a gigantic scale. Wide corridors sweep through vast chambers that penetrate ever deeper into the mountain’s heart. Stupendous statues of grim-faced, bearded warriors stand on massive plinths as they have done for years uncounted. Weirdly, the tomb has no stairs; instead, spiral ramps and chutes connect the place’s myriad levels.

But it is the tomb’s guardians that excite the most comment among adventurers, for no mere animate statues or the like guard the place. Instead, adventurers’ lore speaks of an unknown number of giant iron golems wrought in the shape of the feared eye desports that float soundlessly and untiringly through the tomb in search of intruders. These fearsome guardians ape the creatures that they have been wrought to depict, and only the most powerful intruders can hope to survive, let alone win, an encounter with them.

Village of Lanthorn

Mountains | Goblins | Trolls | Wizards

High up in the mountains, and often besieged by packs of murderous trolls, the village of Lanthorn stands as civilisation’s last glimmering light in an otherwise bleak and barren mountain range. At Lanthorn, the winters are harsh and the summers brief. Sometimes cut off for weeks by driving snow or avalanche, it is an isolated place. Perpetually shadow-wreathed, the village clings to a cliff under a ponderous granitic overhang high up in Kuldor Pass. The heavily defended, fortified village controls traffic through the pass and its lights mark civilisation’s final refuge before the untamed wilderness of the deep, troll-haunted mountains.

Protected by high walls and gigantic magical lanterns imbued with potent fire magic, a strange alliance of wizards—the Grand Conclave of Sublime Artificers—and a gaggle of (almost) civilised goblins—the Flaming Skull tribe—dwells in a bizarre atmosphere that is both scholarly and anarchic and works together to keep the surrounding trolls at bay. The village is famed as a place for the wealthy to commission the creation of unique items of wondrous power.

The goblins—brave (or foolhardy) inveterate scavengers all—also explore the many nearby abandoned, troll-haunted mines dotted through the mountains. Such work is too taxing, dangerous and dirty for the wizards or their trusted servants, but the goblins are at home in the mines’ unending darkness. Therein, they search for lead—in demand for its magic-dampening abilities—and silver, some of which is reputed to have magical properties.

Pennywell Donkey Stables

Adventurers | Caves & Caverns | Shop | Subterranean

Serious expeditions into the Ebon Realms require vast quantities of equipment; wise explorers visit Pennywell Stables to purchase or hire sure-footed donkeys—the best and cheapest way to carry so much gear. The owner, Brigos Clotan, is a canny devil and, as well as selling pack animals and the necessary accoutrements, promotes the idea that it is good luck to cast a silver coin into his well. Superstitious adventurers often fall for his spiel of goodly water spirits dwelling in its waters, and Brigos harvests the resulting coin on a semi-regular basis. Perceptive repeat visitors may notice that the glimmering pile of coins in the well never grows and wonder as to the veracity of Brigos’s tales.

Brigos is a retired miner knowledgeable about subterranean living and working and can give neophyte adventurers much advice regarding expedition planning, underground hazards and the like. For this, he has a good reputation, and adventurers seeking his advice are wise to bring ale or strong spirits to lubricate his memories.

Six Notable Caves

Six Things | Caves & Caverns | Subterranean

  1. The Teeter Stone: This 40 ft. long, elongated stone shard fell from the ceiling onto a section of uneven floor and rests against the wall, forming a natural archway of sorts. Despite the stone’s precarious position, it just touches the wall and floor, and the vigorous attempts by bored adventurers to move it, the Teeter Stone remains in place.

  2. The Dismal Gallery: The site of a mysterious drowning decades ago, the turgid waters of a shallow pool—Eral’s Pool—fill the deepest part of the Dismal Gallery. In local lore, the Dismal Gallery has ever-been associated with unsavoury doings and the general consensus is that the negative emotions of those visiting the place have somehow infected the cave. Few people willingly visit the Dismal Gallery.

  3. Imp Grotto Bridge: A flat stone bridge crosses a sluggish stream where it wends through a stalactite- and stalagmite-filled cave. A casual investigation suggests a magical origin for the bridge. The sound of dripping water mixes with the stream’s endless susurration, creating weird echoes that folklore identifies as the mad whisperings of the cave’s demonic inhabitant.

  4. The Long Drop: A long, winding passageway choked with fallen boulders and rubble ends in the Long Drop—a 60 ft. deep chasm with a dangerous overhang that leads to a rambling network of monster-haunted caverns of unknown extent.

  5. Dead Delver’s Way: Something terrible lurks in the side-passages that pierce the walls of this slender mile-long cavern that descends at an ever-increasing rate the further one delves. Several expeditions have come to grief in Dead Delver’s Way; their few survivors tell of terrible screeching sounds, of companions driven mad with fear, and of dark shadows that no light could dispel. Sane explorers avoid Dead Delver’s Way.

  6. No Way Out Cave: This cave is a convoluted dead end. While it has several promising side caves and spurs, they all end in water-filled sumps or collapsed tunnels. Persistent rumours tell of a further network of caves beyond No Way Out Cave filled with the lost treasures of a forgotten people, but if anyone has found a way to reach it, they’ve kept the route a secret.
