Rugs of Elsewhere

Magic Item

Rugs of elsewhere are incredibly rare and powerful magical items much sought after by wealthy merchants, travellers and adventurers.

Always woven in identical pairs, the enchantments they hold are beyond all but the most powerful enchanters. It takes a full year to weave the necessary teleportation magic into a pair of rugs of elsewhere.

An individual stepping onto a rug of elsewhere is instantly teleported onto the other rug, provided it is on the same plane of existence, and its pattern is not obstructed by anyone or anything else. Thus, they enable their owners to travel vast distances instantly. This can be most useful for adventuring parties who need resupply or other aid in far-flung locales. Merchants also use the rugs to transport small and lightweight goods—gems, spices and so on—vast distances.

The Forgotten Grave

Adventure Hook

A small stand of old, gnarled trees grows in the oldest part of a village’s cemetery. During a storm that hits the area a few days before the characters arrive, one of the trees topples over to reveal an old and forgotten gravestone buried deeply under its roots.

The stone’s inscription is graven in an old, foul language that the locals cannot read. The superstitious villagers are afraid of what might emerge from the grave and maintain a fearful vigil—day and night—around the site. Some argue that the gravestone should be reburied while others fear what might have been awoken by the tree’s fall. The village priest can find no record of the grave in the church’s records, and thus the mystery of the grave and its occupant remains unsolved when the characters arrive…

Monkswell

Hamlet | Ruin

Clustered in and around the crumbling remains of a small monastery, Monkswell is a sleepy, backwater hamlet.

The monastery was built centuries ago over a hermit’s cave whose most notable feature was (and still is) an artesian well—the so-called Monk’s Well—of cold and pure water that never ran dry. Plague ravaged the monastery long ago, and the few monks that survived its attentions fled. Since then, locals have harvested stone from the ruin and continue to use the Monk’s Well as a source of fresh, safe drinking water. They use the monastery’s great hall as a meeting place and, in grim weather, a barn for their precious livestock.

Out of respect and tradition, the peasants tend to the graves of the dead monks, but memory of the monastery’s hidden crypt and treasury died with the last of the monks. Both lurk in the silent, dark below the hamlet, waiting for someone to stumble upon them.

Kusti Ikuturso

NPC

Aloof, unfeeling and prone to fits of epic violence, Kusti Ikuturso (NE middle-aged male human) is not a pleasant person to be around at the best of times. He hates “book-learning” and is proud that he cannot read. Avaricious and deceitful, he is a wastrel often encountered in the locality’s seedier, cheaper taverns. It is safe to say, Kusti is not your typical sage.

Often unkempt as a result of his ferocious and enthusiastic carousing, Kusti has a keen intellect and a prodigious memory. Legends fascinate him, and he is likely encountered listening to a roving bard or storyteller. He uses his prodigious knowledge for his own ends—selling it to those, such as adventurers, who seek more information on this legend or that.

Six Local Landmarks

Six Things | Landmarks

  1. Bleak Cove: Accessible only by the stout ropes left by fishermen and egg-hunters, this hidden cove has a low-tide foreshore replete with deep rock pools. Samphire grows on the cove’s cliffs, and many seabirds nest there.

  2. Bone Beach: Fast-eroding cliffs overlook this sandy beach. A chapel stood on the cliffs, but it collapsed onto the beach long ago. Now, the chapel’s graveyard is also falling prey to the sea, and visitors can make out bones sticking out of the cliffs or littering the beach. Legends of ghosts, hauntings and sinister doings hover thickly about Bone Beach.

  3. The Giant’s Wall: Surrounded by mature oaks and elms alive with birdsong and topped by a thick hedge of brambles and gorse, this earthwork encircles a bare hill top. Perceptive explorers can discover the vague outline of a building atop the hill, but whatever was there has long since rotted away.

  4. Barrow Clump: Wreathed with a crown of gnarled and twisted oaks, hornbeams and elms, this rocky, time-worn hill is widely believed to be a burial place of the Old Folk.

  5. The Fat Man: This massive yew’s bulging trunk is hollow and often serves as a refuge for travellers sheltering from storms, hiding from pursuers and the like. Local lore ages the tree as centuries old.

  6. The Lych Way: This sunken lane runs arrow-straight through the woods before petering out among tumbled stones surrounding an isolated plunge pool. Local legends proscribe the Lych Way’s origin to the ghostly tread of a long-slain lich leading his army to do battle with his arch-rival. The stories tell how every winter solstice the lich rides forth at the head of his undying host. On such nights, the locals stay inside and only venture forth in times of great need.
