Dungeon Dressing: Mundane Chest Contents II

Even villains must have clothes or favourite foods, and these tables can generate such details. Such small items may spark the characters’ interest and could lead to interesting role-playing opportunities or could even give insights into the NPC’s personality and interests.

Wizard’s Chests

  1. The miniature shelves in this chest are stacked with numerous ink bottles of various colours and viscosities. Some sparkle in the light with motes of clearly magical dust suspended within.

  2. An assortment of teeth from various creatures is scattered about this chest.

  3. This chest contains sketches of cave-dwelling creatures and insects bound with twine.

  4. Pairs of severed bird claws stand upright in this chest. All have been removed expertly.

  5. Talons and teeth, some as small as a little finger, others over six inches long, are slotted into small display cases in this chest. The provenance of each set is meticulously labelled.

  6. Small boxes of dust and ash fill this chest.

  7. Large glass lenses are stacked inside this chest.

  8. Metal tubes are strapped down to the bottom of this chest. Otherwise, it’s empty.

  9. Metallic-looking silver, gold and bronze threads are spooled within this chest.

  10. This chest contains a tiny hammer and miniature anvil for some unknown, esoteric, purpose.

  11. This chest holds three mortar and pestle sets: small, medium and large.

  12. Beakers and glass tubes are nestled in this chest’s cushioned interior.

  13. History books, chronologically arranged, are stacked inside this chest.

  14. This chest contains strips of tanned skin—some are of human origin, while others are monstrous in origin.

  15. Despite their gleam, the shiny, polished rocks in this chest sadly are not gems.

  16. Vials containing different types of sand and earth from around the surrounding lands fill this chest.

  17. A pair of reading glasses and several unremarkable books fill this chest.

  18. This chest holds vials of water of varying degrees of clarity and filth.

  19. Desiccated reptiles and amphibians are pinned and laid out on the bottom of this chest.

  20. The chest holds rows of pale candles, wick trimmers and lighting sticks.

Cleric’s Chests

  1. The chest holds two sets of three tiny pyramids that stack inside one another. The pyramids are intricately decorated with lavish paintings of angels and demons fighting one another.

  2. This chest holds a single, unused song and prayer book intended for worship.

  3. This tiny chest holds an equally tiny icon of its owner’s patron’s symbol.

  4. This little chest holds an ordainment icon meant to be pinned to a robe or outer vestment.

  5. A purple robe is neatly folded inside this chest.

  6. This chest holds a coiled bloody whip for self-punishment. It has seen much use.

  7. Blessed vials of water crowd this chest.

  8. This chest holds painted wooden etchings of grave-looking saints.

  9. This padded chest contains several sets of polished bells and cymbals.

  10. This chest holds an elaborate sash woven from human hair along with a matching bone pin.

  11. The book in this chest contains holy teachings, prayers and stories.

  12. The journal in this chest holds a detailed recording of personal sins and their punishments.

  13. Ceremonial garb of splendid appearance is folded neatly within this chest.

  14. This chest holds an indecipherable notebook written in cryptic church code.

  15. An array of ointments and salves sit within this chest.

  16. The ceremonial mask in this chest is adorned with hooks and barbs.

  17. The parchments in this chest contain notations of other sanctuary locations and the faith’s hoarded wealth kept (or hidden) at each location.

  18. This chest has a set of brass rings intended for fingers and toes.

  19. This chest contains a small box that holds chalk and charcoal used for ceremonial purposes.

  20. This chest conceals a collection of bloody cords, whips and chains.
